Does smoking increase the risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19 and even of dying from the disease?

Answer

Yes, smokers are at a significantly higher risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19, or even dying from it.

Smoking also weakens the immune system in general. So it can make you more susceptible to coronavirus infection, and also to developing a severe case of COVID-19.

We strongly recommend you stop smoking. Seeking outside help here will significantly boost your chances of doing so. Here are some resources of support:

  • National Stop Smoking Platform: www.stopsmoking.ch (in German, French, Italian)
  • Stop smoking helpline: 0848 000 181 (8 centimes /min., operated by Swiss Cancer League)
  • smokefree – anti-smoking campaign: www.smokefree.ch
  • Information on protection from passive smoking: www.lungenliga.ch (in German, French, Italian)

Nicotine replacement products can also help you to stop smoking by easing withdrawal symptoms. If you are unable or unwilling to stop smoking, these products can at least help you to cut back.

Above all, try to protect other household members from the effects of passive smoking, particularly children. Always smoke outside, for example.
