Very rarely are there serious side effects. Some individuals have suffered a severe allergic reaction directly after being vaccinated for COVID-19 with an mRNA vaccine. In very rare cases, inflammation of the heart muscle or the pericardium has been observed in the 14 days after the vaccination. Most of these cases were mild and could be treated effectively. Such inflammations can also occur after an infection with the coronavirus.
Apart from this there have so far been no noticeable problems in terms of serious side effects. Experts are keeping a close eye on possible indications. The public authorities and manufacturing companies are still collecting data. The safety and efficacy of the vaccines is subject to constant monitoring.
For a vaccine to be licensed, it has to meet high standards in terms of safety, efficacy and quality. Swissmedic is responsible for authorisation in Switzerland and takes the decision as to whether a vaccine can be authorised. If Swissmedic is able to confirm the efficacy, safety and quality of the vaccine, it will grant market authorisation for Switzerland. These criteria have been confirmed in the case of the Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, Janssen and Novavax vaccines. Swissmedic has authorised these vaccines.
