Why should I renew the QR code of my COVID certificate?

Answer

The certificate requirement within Switzerland was lifted on 17 February 2022. You can, however, still use your COVID certificate for travel purposes. For this to be possible, it is important to renew the QR code for some certificates.

This is because the QR code used for your COVID certificate has limited validity on technical grounds. For the first COVID certificates issued up to 12 July 2021 in Switzerland, the QR code was limited to 365 days. If the QR code has expired, your certificate will come up as invalid for technical reasons when it’s checked using a checking app (for example at the airport). This will happen regardless of whether the date of the last vaccination still falls within the validity rules of the destination country or not. To make it possible to still check the QR code from a technical point of view, it must be renewed when the time arises.

If your certificate’s QR code has to be renewed, a reminder will appear in your COVID Certificate app. You can then renew it yourself in the app; the new QR code will be available as soon as you have done so. You don’t have to request a new certificate from your vaccination centre. Please note: Also replace certificates you have previously printed out or stored with the renewed version.

Whenever possible, always also have other proof equivalent to the certificate (for example your vaccination record booklet or printed proof of vaccination) with you when you enter your country of destination, and before you travel find out from the authorities in the country you’re about to enter about any entry requirements.
